Paying it off

Paying off a merchant cash advance early, and what it can save.

Paying an advance off ahead of schedule works differently from paying off a loan. Here's what changes, what to ask before you sign, and how to request a payoff.

The short answer

Yes, you can pay off a merchant cash advance early, but it doesn't automatically save money the way paying off a loan does. The purchased amount is fixed when you sign, so the balance is whatever is left of it. Some funders offer an early payoff discount; at InstaFunders, early payoff discounts are available case by case. Ask about it before you sign, and request a written payoff letter when you're ready.

Why paying off an MCA early is different from a loan

On a loan, interest accrues on the outstanding balance over time. Pay it off early and you stop the interest from accruing, so you save money almost automatically.

A merchant cash advance has no interest. You sold a set amount of your future receivables, the purchased amount, for a lump sum today. The cost was fixed by the factor rate at signing. Your balance at any moment is simply the purchased amount minus what you've already delivered.

Hypothetical example. A business receives $100,000 at a factor rate of 1.35, so the purchased amount is $135,000. After a few months it has delivered $90,000. The remaining balance is $45,000. Paying off early means delivering that $45,000 now instead of over the coming weeks. Without a discount, the total is still $135,000; you've changed the timing, not the cost. Illustration only.

That fixed total cuts both ways. It's why your hard stop number never grows if sales slow and payments take longer. It's also why early payoff, on its own, doesn't reduce the cost.

Do MCA funders offer early payoff discounts?

Some do, and the terms vary widely across the industry. Some agreements write a discount schedule into the contract, where the amount you save depends on how soon you pay. Others leave it to be agreed at the time. Many offer nothing at all.

At InstaFunders, early payoff discounts are available on a case-by-case basis. The right time to raise it is before you sign, so you know what's possible and can factor it into your plans. Whatever you agree, get it in writing; a verbal "we'll take care of you" isn't a term of your agreement.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Is an early payoff discount available, and how is it calculated?
  • Is it written into the agreement, or decided when I ask?
  • Does it depend on how early I pay, or on paying the full balance at once?
  • Are there any fees for paying off early?
  • How do I request a payoff, and how long is a payoff figure good for?
  • Once I've paid, how quickly will debits stop and the UCC filing be terminated?

These sit alongside the other checks in our guide to reading an MCA offer. If your state requires a commercial financing disclosure, it may also describe what happens if you pay early; see state disclosures.

How to request an MCA payoff letter

  1. Contact your funder and ask for a payoff letter as of a specific date.
  2. Check what it shows. A payoff letter generally states the remaining balance, any discount applied, the date the figure is good through, and how to send payment.
  3. Confirm payment instructions by phone using a number you already know is genuine, not one in an email. Wire fraud that targets payoffs is a real risk.
  4. Ask about debits in progress. An ACH debit already submitted may still post after you pay. Ask how any overlap will be handled.
  5. Send payment before the good-through date.
  6. Get written confirmation that the advance is satisfied, that no further debits will run, and that the funder's UCC filing will be terminated.

Is paying off a merchant cash advance early worth it?

It depends on what the payoff saves and what else the cash could do.

  • With a meaningful discount, paying early can reduce your total cost, and it frees your daily cash flow from the debit.
  • Without a discount, the main benefit is freeing up cash flow and clearing a position. That's useful if you want to qualify for other financing, but you're spending cash now rather than over time.
  • Don't drain your reserves to do it. If paying off would leave the business without a cushion, the advance may be better left to run its course.

A common reason to pay off early is to qualify for cheaper financing, such as a bank line of credit, which may require existing advances to be paid off first. If that's your plan, compare the two in MCA vs. line of credit.

Renewals: an alternative to paying off early

If what you really want is more capital, a renewal may make more sense than paying off and starting over. In a renewal, a new advance pays off the remaining balance of your current one and the rest is paid out to your business.

Be clear-eyed about the math. The new funded amount includes the balance being paid off, so the cash that reaches your account is less than the headline figure, and the new factor rate applies to the whole funded amount. A renewal is a good fit for a business that's performing well and has a real use for more capital; it isn't a way to cover falling revenue. See renewals for how InstaFunders handles them, and check the requirements for new funding.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay off a merchant cash advance early?

Yes. You can deliver the remaining balance of the purchased amount at any time. Because the cost is fixed at signing, paying early doesn't automatically lower it; savings come only from an early payoff discount, if your funder offers one.

Does InstaFunders offer early payoff discounts?

Yes, on a case-by-case basis. Ask before you sign so you know what's available, and get any agreed discount in writing. When you're ready to pay off, call 844-828-7986 to request a payoff letter.

What is an MCA payoff letter?

A payoff letter is a written statement from your funder of the amount needed to satisfy your advance as of a given date. It generally shows the remaining balance, any discount, how long the figure is good for and how to send payment.

Will paying off my MCA early help my business qualify for other financing?

It can. Clearing an advance removes a daily or weekly payment and a position, and banks or other funders may want existing advances paid off before they extend credit. Ask the new provider what it requires first.

Is a renewal the same as an early payoff?

No. An early payoff ends your advance. A renewal is a new advance that pays off the remaining balance and pays out the rest to your business. The new factor rate applies to the whole funded amount, including the portion used for the payoff.
